lothar Schwarz: I think the poem (by my favourite poetess) shows how dangerous it can be to restrict young children's per-spective and desire to widen their horizons, if one does not understand that they look far beyond their little world, seeking to learn and acquire knowledge about the furthest ranges of human life. This youngster's
quest for what lies beyond his/her immediate surroundings is utterly quenched by the mother's pragmatic
but short-sighted approach to life, so that, fatally, this child will never again strive to explore the unlimited richness of human experience. – I felt reminded of "A Message from the Pig-Man", that wonderful and deeply disturbing short story by John Wain, when I came across Millay's poem, recently.
