The Spring And The Fall Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABACC AADAEE FFGAEE

In the spring of the year in the spring of the yearA
I walked the road beside my dearA
The trees were black where the bark was wetB
I see them yet in the spring of the yearA
He broke me a bough of the blossoming peachC
That was out of the way and hard to reachC
-
In the fall of the year in the fall of the yearA
I walked the road beside my dearA
The rooks went up with a raucous trillD
I hear them still in the fall of the yearA
He laughed at all I dared to praiseE
And broke my heart in little waysE
-
Year be springing or year be fallingF
The bark will drip and the birds be callingF
There's much that's fine to see and hearG
In the spring of a year in the fall of a yearA
'Tis not love's going hurt my daysE
But that it went in little waysE

Gary Roseman: This piece is so beautiful, sentimental, and sad. It fairly rings with a word structure which only Millay can compose. I wanted to use this poem in memory of my wife's recent death; however, I (sadly) had to alter slightly the lines which stated 'tis not love's going that hurt my days/ but that it went in little ways. Our love never faded and went in little ways.
