God had called us and we cameA
Our loved Earth to ashes leftB
Heaven was a neighbor's houseC
Open to us bereftB
-
Gay the lights of Heaven showedD
And 'twas God who walked aheadE
Yet I wept along the roadD
Wanting my own house insteadE
-
Wept unseen unheeded criedF
All you things my eyes have kissedG
Fare you well We meet no moreH
Lovely lovely tattered mistG
-
Weary wings that rise and fallI
All day long above the fireJ
Red with heat was every wallI
Rough with heat was every wireJ
-
Fare you well you little windsK
That the flying embers chaseL
Fare you well you shuddering dayM
With your hands before your faceL
-
And ah blackened by strange blightN
Or to a false sun unfurledO
Now forevermore goodbyeP
All the gardens in the worldO
-
On the windless hills of HeavenQ
That I have no wish to seeR
White eternal lilies standS
By a lake of ebonyR
-
But the Earth forevermoreJ
Is a place where nothing growsT
Dawn will come and no bud breakU
Evening and no blossom closeV
-
Spring will come and wander slowW
Over an indifferent landS
Stand beside an empty creekX
Hold a dead seed in her handS
-
God had called us and we cameA
But the blessed road I trodY
Was a bitter road to meR
And at heart I questioned GodY
-
Though in Heaven I said be allI
That the heart would most desireJ
Held Earth naught save souls of sinnersZ
Worth the saving from a fireJ
-
Withered grass the wasted growingA2
Aimless ache of laden boughsB2
Little things God had forgottenQ
Called me from my burning houseC
-
Though in Heaven I said be allI
That the eye could ask to seeR
All the things I ever knewC2
Are this blaze in back of meR
-
Though in Heaven I said be allI
That the ear could think to lackD2
All the things I ever knewC2
Are this roaring at my backD2
-
It was God who walked aheadE
Like a shepherd to the foldE2
In his footsteps fared the weakX
And the weary and the oldE2
-
Glad enough of gladness overJ
Ready for the peace to beR
But a thing God had forgottenQ
Was the growing bones of meR
-
And I drew a bit apartF2
And I lagged a bit behindG2
And I thought on Peace EternalH2
Lest He look into my mindG2
-
And I gazed upon the skyP
And I thought of Heavenly RestI2
And I slipped away like waterJ
Through the fingers of the blestI2
-
All their eyes were fixed on GloryR
Not a glance brushed over meR
Alleluia AlleluiaH2
Up the road and I was freeR
-
And my heart rose like a freshetI2
And it swept me on beforeJ
Giddy as a whirling stickJ2
Till I felt the earth once moreJ
-
All the earth was charred and blackD2
Fire had swept from pole to poleH2
And the bottom of the seaR
Was as brittle as a bowlH2
-
And the timbered mountain topK2
Was as naked as a skullH2
Nothing left nothing leftI2
Of the Earth so beautifulH2
-
Earth I said how can I leave youC2
You are all I have I saidI2
What is left to take my mind upL2
Living always and you deadI2
-
Speak I said Oh tell me somethingA2
Make a sign that I can seeR
For a keepsake To keep alwaysM2
Quick before God misses meR
-
And I listened for a voiceN2
But my heart was all I heardI2
Not a screech owl not a loonO2
Not a tree toad said a wordI2
-
And I waited for a signP2
Coals and cinders nothing moreJ
And a little cloud of smokeQ2
Floating on a valley floorJ
-
And I peered into the smokeQ2
Till it rotted like a fogR2
There encompassed round by fireJ
Stood a blue flag in a bogR2
-
Little flames came wading outI2
Straining straining towards its stemS2
But it was so blue and tallH2
That it scorned to think of themS2
-
Red and thirsty were their tonguesT2
As the tongues of wolves must beR
But it was so blue and tallH2
Oh I laughed I cried to seeR
-
All my heart became a tearJ
All my soul became a towerJ
Never loved I anythingA2
As I loved that tall blue flowerJ
-
It was all the little boatsU2
That had ever sailed the seaR
It was all the little booksV2
That had gone to school with meR
-
On its roots like iron clawsW2
Rearing up so blue and tallH2
It was all the gallant EarthX2
With its back against a wallH2
-
In a breath ere I had breathedI2
Oh I laughed I cried to seeR
I was kneeling at its sideI2
And it leaned its head on meR
-
Crumbling stones and sliding sandI2
Is the road to Heaven nowY2
Icy at my straining kneesZ2
Drags the awful under towI2
-
Soon but stepping stones of dustI2
Will the road to Heaven beR
Father Son and Holy GhostI2
Reach a hand and rescue meR
-
There there my blue flag flowerJ
Hush hush go to sleepA3
That is only God you hearJ
Counting up His folded sheepA3
-
Lullabye lullabyeC2
That is only God that callsB3
Missing me seeking meR
Ere the road to nothing fallsB3
-
He will set His mighty feetI2
Firmly on the sliding sandI2
Like a little frightened birdI2
I will creep into His handI2
-
I will tell Him all my griefC3
I will tell Him all my sinD3
He will give me half His robeE3
For a cloak to wrap you inD3
-
Lullabye lullabyeC2
Rocks the burnt out planet freeR
Father Son and Holy GhostI2
Reach a hand and rescue meR
-
Ah the voice of love at lastI2
Lo at last the face of lightI2
And the whole of His white robeE3
For a cloak against the nightI2
-
And upon my heart asleepA3
All the things I ever knewC2
Holds Heaven not some cranny LordI2
For a flower so tall and blueC2
-
All's well and all's wellH2
Gay the lights of Heaven showI2
In some moist and Heavenly placeL
We will set it out to growI2
