Sonnet 01: Thou Art Not Lovelier Than Lilacs,—no Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBA CDECDE

Thou art not lovelier than lilacs mdash noA
Nor honeysuckle thou art not more fairB
Than small white single poppies mdash I can bearB
Thy beauty though I bend before thee thoughA
From left to right not knowing where to goA
I turn my troubled eyes nor here nor thereB
Find any refuge from thee yet I swearB
So has it been with mist mdash with moonlight soA
-
Like him who day by day unto his draughtC
Of delicate poison adds him one drop moreD
Till he may drink unharmed the death of tenE
Even so inured to beauty who have quaffedC
Each hour more deeply than the hour beforeD
I drink mdash and live mdash what has destroyed some menE
