Fontaine, Je Ne Boirai Pas De Ton Eau! Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDABDEBFB GHBIBJJKB

I know I might have lived in such a wayA
As to have suffered only painB
Loving not man nor dogC
Not money even feelingD
Toothache perhaps but never more than an hour awayA
From skill and novocaineB
Making no contacts dealing with life through Agents drinkingD
one cocktail betting two dollars wearing raincoats in theE
rainB
Betrayed at length by no one but the fogF
Whispering to the wing of the planeB
-
Fountain I have cried to that unbubbling well I will notG
drink of thy water Yet I thirstH
For a mouthful of mdash not to swallow only to rinse my mouth inB
mdash peaceI
And while the eyes of the past condemnB
The eyes of the present narrow into assignation And mdashJ
worst mdashJ
The young are so old they are born with their fingers crossedK
I shall get no help from themB
