SINCE Faith is a veil that has nothing behind itA
And Hope wanders lost where no mortal can find itA
Since Love is a mirror we break in a minuteB
In snatching the image our soul has cast in itA
What is the use of the Summers and SpringsC
The wave of the woods and the waft of the wingsC
Since all means nothing and good things and illD
Make madness a mirage tormenting us stillD
-
Since all the fighting the ardent endeavourE
The heart cast bleeding to feed the IdealF
Are vain vain vain and the one thing realF
Is that all's vain for ever and everE
Why then be a man and stand back from the strifeG
Fall by the sword but keep out of the snareH
Will but to be and be willing to bearH
All that the gods may lay on your of lifeG
-
In the far East where light ever dawns firstI
There has man learned how the Fates may be cheatedJ
How by our craft may their strength be defeatedJ
Though all our best be no match for their worstI
Kill the desire that they set in your bosomK
Long not for fruit when you gaze on the blossomK
Dream not of flowers when you gaze on the budJ
Kill all the rebels that shout in your bloodJ
Sorrow and sickness disease and decayL
These toll the hours of Life's desolate dayL
Hopes unfulfilled and forbidden delightM
These are the dreams of Life's treacherous nightM
So let me image an infinite peaceN
Touched with no joy but the ease of releaseN
Out of the eddies I climb and I ceaseN
Keeping in change for this man's soul of meO
Something which by the eternal decreeO
Is as like Nothing as Something can beO
-
Not to desire to admit to adoreP
Casting the robe of the soul that you woreP
Just as the soul casts the body's robe downQ
This is man's destiny this is man's crownQ
This is the splendour the end of the feastR
This is the light of the Star in the EastR
-
So Silence reconciles Life's jarring phrasesS
Far in the future austere and augustT
Meanwhile the buds of the poplars are fallingU
Spring's on the lawn and a little voice callingU
'Daddy come out Daddy darling you mustT
Daddy come out and help Molly pick daisies '-
And since one's here and the Spring's in the gardenV
How many lives hence will that thought earn pardonV
Since one's a man and man's heart is insistentW
And since Nirvana is doubtful and distantW
Though life's a hard road and thorny to travelX
Stones in the borders and grass on the gravelX
Still there's the wisdom that wise men call follyO
Still one can go and pick daisies with MollyO
