This was my little sonA
Who leapt and laughed on my kneeB
Body we made with loveC
Soul made with love by TheeB
This was the mysteryB
In which I worshipped Thy graceD
This was the sign to meB
The unveiling of Thy faceD
This that lies under Thy skiesE
Naked as on that dayF
When the floor of heaven gave wayF
And the glory of God shone throughG
When the world was made newG
And Thy word was made flesh for meB
He lies there bare to Thy skiesE
O Lord God seeB
-
Body that was in mineH
A secret sacred spellI
Little hands I have kissedJ
Trampled by beasts in HellI
Growing beauty and graceD
Oh head that lay on my bosomK
Broken battered shatteredL
Body that grew like a blossomK
All that was promised meB
On my life's royal dayF
Every promise brokenA
Only a ghost and clayF
-
O God I kneel at Thy feetM
I lay my hands in ThineH
Thou gavest Thy Son for the worldN
And shall I not give mineH
Only O God have pityB
All my defences are downO
God I accept the CrossP
Let HIM have the CrownO
-
By all that my love has borneQ
By all that all mothers bearR
By the infinite patient anguishS
By the never ceasing prayerR
By the thoughts that cut like a living knifeT
By the tears that are never dryU
Take what he died to win YouG
God take Your victoryB
-
We have watched on till the light burned lowV
And watched the dawn awakeW
We have lived hardly and hardly faredX
For our sons' sakeW
All that was good in Thy earthY
All that taught us of HeavenA
All that we had in the worldN
We have givenA
We pray with empty handsZ
And hearts that are stiff with painA2
O God O God O GodB2
Let the sacrifice not be vainA2
This is his blood Lord seeB
His blood that was shed for TheeB
Thy banner is dyed in that red tideC2
Lord take Thy victoryB
-
God give Thine angels powerD2
To fight as he foughtE2
To scatter the hosts of evilF2
To bring their boastings to naughtE2
Gabriel with trumpet of battleF2
Michael who wields Thy swordG2
Breathe Thou Thy spirit upon themH2
Put forth Thy strength O LordG2
See Lord this is his bodyB
Broken for Thee for TheeB
My son my little sonA
Who leapt and laughed on my kneeB
