The Monk Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EF GHGH IJIK LMLN

WHEN in my narrow cell I lieA
The long day's penance done at lastB
I see the ghosts of days gone byA
And hear the voices of the pastB
-
-
I see the blue gray wood smoke curledC
From hearths where life has rhymed to loveD
I see the kingdoms of the worldC
The glory and the power thereofD
-
-
And cry 'Ah vainly have I striven '-
And then a voice calls soft and lowE
'Thou gavest My Earth to win My HeavenF
But Heaven on Earth thou mayest not know '-
-
-
It is not for Thy Heaven O LordG
That I renounced Thy pleasant earthH
The ship the furrow and the swordG
The dreams of death the dreams of birthH
-
-
Weary of vigil fast and prayerI
Weak in my hope and in my faithJ
O Christ for whom this cross I bearI
Meet me beside the gate of DeathK
-
-
When the night comes then let me restL
O Christ who sanctifiest painM
Falling asleep upon Thy breastL
And if Thou wilt wake never againN
