The Gift Of The Gods Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGFG HIHI JKLK MNM MMM

'GIVE me thy dreams ' she said and IA
With empty hands and very poorB
Watched my fair flowery visions dieA
Upon the temple's marble floorC
-
-
'Give joy ' she said I let joy goD
I saw with cold unclouded eyesE
The crimson of the sunset glowD
Across the disenchanted skiesE
-
-
'Give me thy youth ' she said I gaveF
And sudden clouded died the sunG
And on the green mound of a graveF
Fell the slow raindrops one by oneG
-
-
'Give love ' she cried I gave that tooH
'Give beauty ' Beauty sighed and fledI
For what on earth should beauty doH
When love who was her life was deadI
-
-
She took the balm of innocent tearsJ
To hiss upon her altar coalK
She took the hopes of all my yearsL
And at the last she took my soulK
-
-
With heart made empty of delightM
And hands that held no more fair thingsN
I questioned her 'What shall requiteM
The savour of my offerings '-
-
-
'The Gods ' she said 'with generous handM
Give guerdon for thy gifts of costM
Wisdom is thine to understandM
The worth of all that thou hast lost '-
