The Adventurer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFFE GAAG HBBH A IA

THE land of gold was far awayA
The sea a challenge roared betweenB
I left my throne my crown my queenB
And sailed out of the quiet bayA
-
-
I met the challenge of the waveC
The curses of the winds I mockedD
The conquered wave my galley rockedD
The wind became my envious slaveC
-
-
I brought much treasure from afarE
Spices and shells and rich attireF
Red rubies fed with living fireF
To lie where all my longings areE
-
-
Heavy with spoil my keel ploughed lowG
As slow we sailed into the bayA
And long ago seemed yesterdayA
And yesterday looked long agoG
-
-
I came in triumph from the seaH
Bent was my crown my courts grown meanB
And on my throne a faded queenB
Raised alien eyes and looked at meH
-
-
'My queen These rubies let me layA
Upon thy heart as once my head '-
She smiled pale scorn 'My heart ' she saidI
And turned her weary eyes awayA
