On The Downs Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABA CDCDC EFEFE GHGHG IJIJK

THE little moon is deadA
Drowned in the flood of rainB
That drips from roof of byre and shedA
And splashes in the laneB
The leafless lean flanked lane where last year's leaves are spreadA
-
-
The sheep cower in the foldC
Where the rain beats them blindD
Where scarce the rotten hurdles holdC
Against the weary windD
That moans with angry tears across the pathless woldC
-
-
Dim lights across the downE
Show where the lone farms lieF
The twisted trees have lost their brownE
Are black against the skyF
And far below blink lights gay lights of Brighton townE
-
-
Ah was the moon once brightG
And did the thyme smell sweetH
Where between dewy dusk and lightG
The warm turf felt our feetH
And bean flowers scented all the enchanted summer nightG
-
-
Did sheep bells tinkle clearI
Across the golden hazeJ
Were the woods ever leafy dearI
In those forgotten daysJ
The wet wind shrieks denial no other voice speaks hereK
