Le jeu ne vaut pas la chandelleA
-
THIS treasure of love these passion flowersB
Dear as desire are dearly boughtC
The sweet unrest of seeing youD
For some too happy hour or twoD
Is paid by such a wealth of tearsE
Such grief such bitterness such fearsF
Such wild remorse such weak regretG
Such tide of longing towards you setG
As poison all my other hoursB
And murder every other thoughtH
-
-
I cannot drink joy steeped in fearsF
I choose the cold unhurtful daysI
The roses you hold out to meJ
Are red and sweet enough to beJ
A crown one would so gladly wearK
If but one's brows were strong to bearK
The weight and did not ache and acheL
For the fair coronation's sakeL
And dread of coming crownless yearsF
When tired feet shall tread thorny waysI
-
-
There is a peace in sombre skiesM
Where no sun even tries to shineN
But not in these where transient glowA
And passionate bursts of sunshine showA
Only life's dull fields drenched with rainO
And then the clouds set fast againP
Into a leaden sky like this isQ
Lit by no lightnings of warm kissesR
Whence while I look into your eyesM
A thunderbolt may fall on mineN
-
-
I give you back the rose I stoleA
Pluck but pale leaves that near me growA
I cannot love with half a heartS
'Tis all or nothing for my partS
And since the all may not be oursB
Since we may only pluck Love's flowersB
But may not in his temple stayT
I choose the grey and lonely wayT
And you be thankful from your soulA
That loving you I let you goA
