Who Died on October thA
-
THERE was a dayB
A horrible Autumn dayB
When from her home the home she made for oursC
And that day made a nightmare of white flowersC
And folk in black who whispered pityinglyD
They carried her awayB
And left our hearts all coldE
And empty yet with such a store to holdE
Of sodden grief the slow drops still ooze outF
And falling on all fair things they wither theseG
Tears came with time but not with time went byH
-
And still we wander desolate aboutF
The poor changed house the garden and the croftI
Warm kitchen sunny parlour with the softJ
Intolerable pervading memoriesG
Of her whose face and voice made melodiesG
Sweet unforgotten songs of mother loveK
Dear songs of all the little joys that wereL
We see the sun and have no joy thereofK
Because she gathered in her dying handsM
And carried with her to the fair far landsM
The flower of all our joy because she wentN
Out of the garden where her days were spentN
And took the very sun away with herL
-
The cross stands at her headO
Over her breast that loving mother breastP
Close buds of pansies purple and white are pressedP
It seems a place for restP
For happy folded sleep but ah not thereQ
Not there not there our hardest tears are shedO
But in the house made empty for her sakeR
Here in the night intolerable wakeR
The hungry passionate pains of Love still strongS
To fight with death the bitter slow night longS
Then the rich price that poor Love has to payB
Is paid slow drop by drop till the new dayB
With thin cold fingers pushes back night's wingsT
And drags us out to common cruel thingsT
That sting and barb their stings with memoryU
O Love and is the price too hard to giveV
Thine is the splendour of all things that liveW
And this thy pain the price of life to theeU
The sacrament that binds to the belovedX
The chain that holds though mountains be removedY
The portent of thine immortalityU
-
So in the house of pain imprisoned weU
Endure our bondage and work out our timeZ
Nor seek from out our dungeon walls to climbZ
Bondsmen who would not if we could be freeU
Thank God our hands still hold Love's cord and sheU
Do not her hands still clasp the cord we holdE
Drawing us near coiling bright fold on foldE
Till the far day when it shall draw us nearA2
To the sight of her her living hands her dearA2
Tired face grown weary of watching for our faceB2
And we shall hold her in the happy placeB2
And hear her voice the old same voice we knewC2
'Ah children I am tired of wanting you '-
-
Or in some world more beautiful and dearA2
Than any she ever even dreamed of hereD2
Where time is changed does she await the dayB
She longed for and so little a while awayB
When all the love we watered with our tearsE2
Shall bloom transplanted by the kindly yearsF2
Dreaming through her new garden does she goG2
Remembering the old garden long agoG2
Tending new flowers more fair than those that growG2
In this sad garden where such sad flowers blowG2
And fondly touching bud and leaf and shootH2
Training her flowers to perfect branch and rootH2
Does she sometimes entreat some darling flowerL
To wait a little for its opening hourL
Can you not hear her voice 'Ah not to dayB
While my dear flowers my own are far awayB
Be patient bud to morrow soon will comeI2
Ah blossom when my little girl comes home '-
-
But now But hereD2
The empty house the always empty placeB2
The black remembrance that no night blots outF
The memories white unbearable and dearA2
That no white sunlight makes less cruel and clearA2
The resistless riotous routF
Of cruel conquering thoughts the night the dayB
Love is immortal this the price to payB
Worse than all pain it would be to forgetJ2
On Love's brave brow the crown of thorns is setJ2
Love is no niggard though the price be highH
Into God's market Love goes forth to buyH
With royal meed God's greatest gifts and gainK2
Love offers up his whole rich store of painK2
And buys of God Love's immortalityU
