Gretna Green Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGFHIHI BEBGHJHJ CKCKHLHL MNMNHOHO

Last night when I kissed youA
My soul caught alightB
And oh how I missed youA
The rest of the nightB
Till Love in derisionC
Smote sleep with his wingsD
And gave me in visionC
Impossible thingsD
-
A night that was cloudedE
Long windows asleepF
Dark avenues crowdedG
With secrets to keepF
A terrace a loverH
A foot on the stairI
The waiting was overH
The lady was thereI
-
What a flight what a nightB
The hoofs splashed and poundedE
Dark fainted in lightB
And the first bird notes soundedG
You slept on my shoulderH
Shy night hid your faceJ
But dawn bolder colderH
Beheld our embraceJ
-
Your lips of vermilionC
Your ravishing shapeK
The flogging postillionC
The village agapeK
The rattle and thunderH
Of postchaise a speedL
My woman my wonderH
My ultimate needL
-
We two matched for matingM
Came handclasped at lastN
Where the blacksmith was waitingM
To fetter us fastN
At the touch of the fetterH
The dream snapped and fellO
And I woke to your letterH
That bade me farewellO
