I found a starving cat in the streetA
It cried for food and a place by the fireB
I carried it home and I strove to meetA
The claims of its desireB

And since its desire was a little fishC
A little hay and a little milkD
I gave it cream in a silver dishC
And a basket lined with silkD
-
And when we came to the grateful pauseE
When it should have fawned on the hand that fedF
It turned to a devil all teeth and clawsE
Scratched me and bit me and fledF
-
To pay for the fish and the milk and the hayG
With a purr had been an easy taskH
But its hate and my blood were required to payG
For the gifts that it did not askH
