For The New Year Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGCGC HIHIJCJC HKHKGAGA ALAHJCJC

FLUSHED with a crimson sunrise beautyA
The fair new year its promise gaveB
Such dreams we had of love of dutyA
Of heights to scale of foes to braveB
Oh how hope's fire our future lightedC
How much to do how much to knowD
Yet on its brink we shrank affrightedC
A year agoD
-
-
And now the year is done its pleasureE
So brief so bright its hours of painF
Some moments' memories we treasureE
Some recollections loathe in vainF
Oh for a brain where could not wakenG
Remembrances of purpose crossedC
Of trusts abandoned aims forsakenG
And chances lostC
-
-
The changing seasons thrust upon usH
Another year fair faced and newI
What evil have the old years done usH
That this in its turn will not doI
This too will die and leave us grievingJ
For all the ills its arms enfoldC
For faiths betrayed for friends deceivingJ
And love grown coldC
-
-
We have been fooled The hopes that fooled usH
We know them now have been a lieK
The star that led the light that ruled usH
We scorn them and we pass them byK
Shut out hope's light past is the seasonG
When rose red glow seemed good to seeA
Look by the cold white light of reasonG
These things shall beA
-
-
A long dim vista blank and drearyA
The same hard failure small successL
The same tired heart the brain still wearyA
Of its intense self consciousnessH
The old despair the old repiningJ
And through the future's deepest nightC
Down life's untrodden ways still shiningJ
The old hope's lightC
