O CHRIST born on the holy dayA
I have no gift to give my KingB
No flowers grow by my weary wayA
I have no birthday song to singB
-
-
How can I sing Thy name and praiseC
Who never saw Thy face divineD
Who walk in darkness all my daysC
And see no Eastern stars a shineD
-
-
Yet when their Christmas gifts they bringB
How can I leave Thy praise unsungE
How stay from homage to the KingB
And hold a silent grudging tongueE
-
-
Lord I found many a song to singB
And many a humble hymn of praiseC
For Thy great Miracle of SpringB
The wonder of the waxing daysC
-
-
When I beheld Thy days and yearsF
Did I not sing Thy pleasant earthG
The moons of love the years of tearsH
The mysteries of death and birthG
-
-
Have I not sung with all my soulI
While soul and song were mine to yieldJ
Thy lightning crown Thy cloud controlI
The dewy clover of Thy fieldJ
-
-
Have I not loved Thy birds and beastsK
Thy streams and woods Thy sun and shadeL
Have I not made me holy feastsK
Of all the beauty Thou hast madeL
-
-
What though my tear tired eyes alasM
Won never grace Thy face to seeN
I heard Thy footstep on the grassM
Thy voice in every wind blown treeN
-
-
No music now I make or winO
Yet Lord remember I have beenO
The lover of Thy world whereinO
I found nought common or uncleanP
-
-
Grown old and blind I sing no moreQ
Thy saints in heaven sing sweet and strongR
Yet take the songs I made of yoreQ
For echoes to Thy birthday songR
