To Coroner Merival greetings but a voiceA
Dissentient from much that goes the roundsB
Concerning Elenor Murray Here's my wordC
Give men and women freedom save the landD
From dull theocracy the theo whatE
A blend of Demos and Jehovah SayF
Bring back your despots bring your Louis FourteenthsF
And give them thrones of gold and ivoryG
From where with leaded sceptres they may whackH
King Demos driven forth You know the faceF
The temples are like sea shells hollows outI
Which narrow close the space for cortex cellsF
There would be little brow if hair remainedJ
But hair is gone because the dandruff cameK
The eyes are close together like a weasel'sF
The jaws are heavy that is characterL
The mouth is thin and wide to gobble chickenM
The paunch is heavy for the chickens eatenM
Throned high upon a soap box Demos rulesF
And mumbles decalogues Thou shalt not readN
Save what I tell you never books that tellO
Of men and women as they live and areP
Thou shalt not see the dramas which portrayF
The evil passions and satiric moodsF
Which mock this Christian nation and its hopeQ
Thou shalt not drink not even wine or beerR
Thou shalt not play at cards or see the racesF
Thou shalt not be divorced Thou shalt not playF
Thou shalt not bow to graven imagesF
Of beauty cut in marble fused in bronzeF
Behold my name is Demos King of KingsF
My name is legion I am many comeS
Out of the sea where many hogs were drownedT
And now the ruler of hogocracyF
Where in the name of freedom hungry snoutsF
Root up the truffles in your great republicU
And crunch with heavy jaws the legs and armsF
Of people who fall over in the penV
Hierarchies in my name are planted underL
Your states political to sprout and takeW
The new world's soil religious freedom thisF
Thought must be free unless your thought objectsF
To such dominion and to literal faithX
In an old book that never had a placeF
Except beside the Koran ZarathustraL
So here is your theocracy and hereL
The land of Boredom Do you wonder nowY
That people cry for war You see that GodZ
Frowns on all games but war You shall not playF
Or kindle spirit with a rapture saveA2
A moral end's in view All joy is sinB2
Where joy stands for itself alone nor asksF
Consent to be save for itself But warL
Waged to put down the wrong it's always thatC2
To vindicate God's truths all wars are suchD2
Is game that lets the spirit play is backedE2
By God and moral reasons therefore warL
A game disguised as business cosmic workF2
For great millenniums no less relievesF
The boredom of theocracies But ifG2
Your men and women had the chance to playF
Be free and spend superfluous energiesF
In what I call the greatest game that's LifeH2
Have life more freely deeply and you sayF
How would you like a war and lose a legI2
Or come from battle sick for all your yearsF
You would say no unless you saw an issueF
Stripped clean of Christian twaddle as we'll sayF
The Greeks beheld the Persians Well beholdJ2
All honest paganism in such things discardedK2
For God who comes in glory trampling pressesF
Filled up with grapes of wrathL2
-
Now hear me outI
I knew we'd have a war it wasn't onlyG
That your hogocracy was grunting warL
We'd fight Japan take Mexico rememberL
How dancing flourished madly in the landD
Then think of savages who dance the Ghost DanceF
And cattle lowing rushing in a panicM2
There's psychic secrets here But then at lastN2
What can you do with life You're well and strongO2
Flushed with desire mad with appetitesF
You turn this way and find a sign forbiddenM
You turn that way and find the door is closedP2
Hogocracy King Demos say go backH
Find work develop character restrainQ2
Draw up your belt a little tighter hungerL
And thirst diminish with a tighter beltR2
And none to say take off the belt and eatS2
Here's water for youF
-
Well you have a warL
We used to say in foot ball kick their shinsF
And gouge their eyes out when our shins were kickedT2
We hollered foul and ouch There was the southU2
Who called us mud sills in this freer northV2
And mouthed democracy and as for thatC2
Their churches made of God a battle leaderL
An idea come from Palestine oh yesF
They soon would wipe us up they were the peopleW2
But when we slaughtered them they hollered ouchX2
And why not For a gun and uniformY2
And bands that play are rapturous enoughZ2
But when you get a bullet through the heartA3
The game is not so funny as it wasF
That's why I hated Germany and hate herL
And feel we could not let this German cultureL
Spread over earth That culture was but thisF
Life must have an expression and a gameK
And war's the game besides the prize is greatB3
In land and treasure commerce let us playF
It lets the people's passions have a ventC3
When fires of life burn hot and hotter underL
The kettle and the lid is clamped by workF2
Dull duty daily routine inhibitionsF
Before this Elenor Murray woke to lifeH2
LeRoy was stirring but the stir was playF
It was a Gretna Green and pleasure boatsF
Ran up and down the river on the streetsF
You heard the cry of barkers in the parkD3
The band was playing and you heard the ringE3
Of registers at fountains and buffetsF
All this was shabby maybe but observeF3
There are those souls who see the wrath of GodZ
As blackest background to the light of soulG3
And when the thunder rumbles and the stormY2
Comes up with lightning then they say to menV
Who laugh in bar rooms Have a care blasphemersF
You may be struck by lightning here's the rootH3
From which this mood ascetic comes to leafI3
In all theocracies and throws a shadowJ3
Upon all freedomS
-
Look at us to dayF
They say to me see what a town we haveK3
The men at work smoke coming from the chimneysF
The banks full up of money business goodL3
The workmen sober going home at nightM3
No rowdy barkers and no bands a playingE3
No drinking and no gaming and no viceF
No marriages contracted to be brokenM
Look how LeRoy is quiet sane and cleanN3
And I reply you like the stir of workF2
But not the stir of play your chimneys smokeO3
Your banks have money Let me look behindP3
The door that closes on your man at homeQ3
The wife and children there what shall I findP3
A sick man looks to health as it were allR3
But when the fever leaves him and he feelsF
The store of strength in muscles slumberingE3
And waiting to be used then something elseF
Than health is needful he must have a wayF
To voice the life within him and he wondersF
Why health seemed so desirable beforeL
And all sufficient to himS3
-
Take this girlT3
Why do you marvel that she rode at nightM3
With any man who came along Good GodZ
If I were born a woman and they put meG
In a theocracy hogocracyF
I'd do the first thing that came in my mindP3
To give my soul expression Don't you thinkU3
You're something of a bully and a cowardC
To ask such model living from this girlT3
When you my grunting hogos run the landD
And bring us scandals like the times of GrantV3
And poisoned beef sold to the soldier boysF
When we were warring Spain and all this stuffZ2
Concerning loot and plunder malversationN3
That riots in your cities printed dailyG
I roll the panoramic story outI
To Washington the great what do I seeG
It's tangle foot the sticky smear is dryL
But I can find wings legs and heads rememberL
How little flies and big were buzzing onceF
Of God and duty country virtue faithX
And beating wings already gummed with sweetS2
Until their little bellies touched the glueF
They sought to fill their bellies with at lastN2
Long silence which is history scroll rolled upW3
And spoken of in sacred whispersF
-
WellO
I'm glad that Elenor Murray had her flingE3
If that be really true I understandD
What drove her to the war I think she knewF
Too much to marry settle down and liveX3
Under the rule of Demos or of HogosF
I wish we had a dozen Elenor MurraysF
In every village in this land of DemosF
To down Theocracy which is just as badY3
As Prussianism is no differentZ3
From Prussianism And I fear but thisF
As fruitage of the war that men and womenN3
Will have burnt on their souls the words ceramicM2
That war's the thing and this theocracyF
Where generous outlets for the soul are stoppedA4
Will keep the words in mind When boredom comesF
And grows intolerable you'll see the landD
Go forth to war to get a thrill and liveX3
Unless we work for freedom for delightM3
And self expressionN3

Dwight Henry is another writer of lettersF
Stirred by the Murray inquest writes a screedB4
The House that Jack Built read by MerivalO
To entertain his jury in these wordsF
