Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQNRQ QSQTQUQVW

Rich honored by my fellow citizensA
The father of many children born of a noble motherB
All raised thereC
In the great mansion house at the edge of townD
Note the cedar tree on the lawnE
I sent all the boys to Ann Arbor all the girls to RockfordF
The while my life went on getting more riches and honorsG
Resting under my cedar tree at eveningH
The years went onI
I sent the girls to EuropeJ
I dowered them when marriedK
I gave the boys money to start in businessL
They were strong children promising as applesM
Before the bitten places showN
But John fled the country in disgraceO
Jenny died in child birthP
I sat under my cedar treeQ
Harry killed himself after a debauchN
Susan was divorcedR
I sat under my cedar treeQ
Paul was invalided from over studyQ
Mary became a recluse at home for love of a manS
I sat under my cedar treeQ
All were gone or broken winged or devoured by lifeT
I sat under my cedar treeQ
My mate the mother of them was takenU
I sat under my cedar treeQ
Till ninety years were tolledV
O maternal Earth which rocks the fallen leaf to sleepW
