Thomas Ross, Jr. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGAAHAICJKCLMN

This I saw with my own eyesA
A cliff swallowB
Made her nest in a hole of the high clay bankC
There near Miller's FordD
But no sooner were the young hatchedE
Than a snake crawled up to the nestF
To devour the broodG
Then the mother swallow with swift flutteringsA
And shrill criesA
Fought at the snakeH
Blinding him with the beat of her wingsA
Until he wriggling and rearing his headI
Fell backward down the bankC
Into Spoon River and was drownedJ
Scarcely an hour passedK
Until a shrikeC
Impaled the mother swallow on a thornL
As for myself I overcame my lower natureM
Only to be destroyed by my brother's ambitionN
