The Room Of Mirrors Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEEFFGGHHIIHHH HHHHJJKKDCLMHHK NNOOPPQPQRRAAHHOORRS HI saw a room where many feet were dancing | A |
The ceiling and the wall were mirrors glancing | A |
Both flames of candles and the heaven's light | B |
Though windows there were none for air or flight | B |
The room was in a form polygonal | C |
Reached by a little door and narrow hall | D |
One could behold them enter for the dance | E |
And waken as it were out of a trance | E |
And either singly or with some one whirl | F |
The old the young full livers boy and girl | F |
And every panel of the room was just | G |
A mirrored door through which a hand was thrust | G |
Here there around the room a soul to seize | H |
Whereat a scream would rise but no surcease | H |
Of music or of dancing save by him | I |
Drawn through the mirrored panel to the dim | I |
And unknown space behind the flashing mirrors | H |
And by his partner struck through by the terrors | H |
Of sudden loss | H |
- | |
And looking I could see | H |
That scarcely any dancer here could free | H |
His eyes from off the mirrors but would gaze | H |
Upon himself or others till a craze | H |
Shone in his eyes thus to anticipate | J |
The hand that took each dancer soon or late | J |
Some analyzed themselves some only glanced | K |
Some stared and paled and then more madly danced | K |
One dancer only never looked at all | D |
He seemed soul captured by the carnival | C |
There were so many dancers there he loved | L |
He was so greatly by the music moved | M |
He had no time to study his own face | H |
There in the mirrors as from place to place | H |
He quickly danced | K |
- | |
Until I saw at last | N |
This dancer by the whirling dancers cast | N |
Face full against a mirrored panel where | O |
Before he could look at himself or stare | O |
He plunged through to the other side and quick | P |
As water closes when you lift the stick | P |
The mirrored panel swung in place and left | Q |
No trace of him as 'twere a magic trick | P |
But all his partners thus so soon bereft | Q |
Went dancing to the music as before | R |
But I saw faces in that mirrored door | R |
Anatomizing their forced smiles and watching | A |
Their faces over shoulders even matching | A |
Their terror with each other's to repress | H |
A growing fear in seeing it was less | H |
Than some one else's or to ease despair | O |
By looking in a face who did not care | O |
While watching for the hand that through some door | R |
Caught a poor dancer from the dancing floor | R |
With every time beat of the orchestra | S |
What is this room of mirrors Who can say | H |
