Two children in a gardenA
Shouting for joyB
Were playing dolls and housesC
A girl and boyB
I smiled at a neighbor windowD
And watched them playE
Under a budding oak treeF
On a wintry dayE
-
And then a board half brokenA
In the high fenceG
Fell over and there enteredH
I know not whenceG
A jailbird face of yellowD
With a vacant sulkI
His body was a sicklyF
Thing of bulkI
-
His open mouth was slaveringI
And a green lightJ
Turned disc like in his eyeballsK
Like a dog's at nightJ
His teeth were like a giant'sL
And far apartM
I saw him reel on the childrenA
With a stopping heartM
He trampled their dolls and ruinedN
The house they madeO
He struck to earth the childrenA
With a dirty spadeO
As a tiger growls with an antelopeP
After the huntQ
Over the little facesC
I heard him gruntQ
-
I stood at the window frozenA
And short of breathR
And then I saw the idiotS
Was Master DeathR
-
A bird in the lilac bushesC
Began to singI
The garden colored before meF
To the kiss of springI
And the yellow face in a momentQ
Was a mystic whiteJ
The matted hair was softenedN
To starry lightJ
The ragged coat flowed downwardH
Into a robeT
He carried a sword and a balanceU
And stood on a globeT
I watched him from the windowD
Under a spellV
The idiot was the angelW
