Sir Launcelot had fled to FranceA
For the peace of GuinevereB
And many a noble knight was slainC
And Arthur lay on his bierB
-
Sir Launcelot took ship from FranceA
And sailed across the seaD
He rode seven days through fair EnglandE
Till he came to AlmesburyB
-
Then spake Sir Bors to LauncelotF
The old time is at endG
You have no more in England's realmH
In east nor west a friendG
-
You have no friend in all EnglandE
Sith Mordred's war hath beenI
And Queen Guinevere became a nunJ
To heal her soul of sinI
-
Sir Launcelot answered never a wordK
But rode to the west countreeB
Until through the forest he saw a lightL
That shone from a nunneryB
-
Sir Launcelot entered the cloisterB
And the queen fell down in a swoonM
Oh blessed Jesu saith the queenN
For thy mother's love a boonM
-
Go hence Sir Launcelot saith the queenN
And let me win God's graceO
My heavy heart serves me no moreB
To look upon thy faceO
-
Through you was wrought King Arthur's deathP
Through you great war and wrakeQ
Leave me alone let me bleedR
Pass by for Jesu's sakeQ
-
Then fare you well saith LauncelotF
Sweet Madam fare you wellS
And sythen you have left the worldT
No more in the world I dwellS
-
Then up rose sad Sir LauncelotF
And rode by wold and mereB
Until he came to a hermitageU
Where bode Sir BedivereB
-
And there he put a habit onV
And there did pray and fastW
And when Sir Bedivere told him allX
His heart for sorrow brastW
-
How that Sir Mordred traitorous knightW
Betrayed his King and sireB
And how King Arthur wounded diedW
Broken in heart's desireB
-
And so Sir Launcelot penance madeW
And worked at servile toilY
And prayed the Bishop of CanterburyB
His sins for to assoilY
-
His shield went clattering on the wallY
To a dolorous wail of windW
His casque was rust his mantle dustW
With spider webs entwinedW
-
His listless horses left aloneZ
Went cropping where they wouldW
To see the noblest knight of the worldW
Upon his sorrow broodW
-
Anon a Vision came in his sleepA2
And thrice the Vision saithP
Go thou to Almesbury for thy sinI
Where lieth the queen in deathP
-
Sir Launcelot cometh to AlmesburyB
And knelt by the dead queen's bierB
Oh none may know moaned LauncelotW
What sorrow lieth hereB
-
What love what honor what defeatW
What hope of the Holy GrailY
The moon looked through the latticed glassB2
On the queen's face cold and paleY
-
Sir Launcelot kissed the cer d clothP
And none could stay his woeC2
Her hair lay back from the oval browB
And her nose was clear as snowC2
-
They wrapped her body in cloth of RainesD2
They put her in webs of leadW
They coffined her in white marbleY
And sang a mass for the deadW
-
Sir Launcelot and seven knightsE2
Bore torches around the bierB
They scattered myrrh and frankincenseF2
On the corpse of GuinevereB
-
They put her in earth by King ArthurB
To the chant of a doleful tuneM
They heaped the earth on GuinevereB
And Launcelot fell in a swoonM
-
Sir Launcelot went to the hermitageU
Some Grace of God to findW
But never he ate and never he drankQ
And there he sickened and dwinedW
-
Sir Launcelot lay in a painful bedW
And spake with a dreary stevenJ
Sir Bishop I pray you shrive my soulY
And make it clean for heavenJ
-
The Bishop houseled Sir LauncelotW
The Bishop kept watch and wardW
Bury me saith Sir LauncelotW
In the earth of Joyous GuardW
-
Three candles burned the whole night throughB
Till the red dawn looked in the roomG2
And the white white soul of LauncelotW
Strove with a black black doomG2
-
I see the old witch Dame BrisenJ
And Elaine so straight and tallY
Nay saith the Bishop of CanterburyB
The shadows dance on the wallY
-
I see long hands of dead womenJ
They clutch for my soul eftsoonJ
Nay saith the Bishop of CanterburyB
'Tis the drifting light of the moonJ
-
I see three angels saith heB
Before a silver urnJ
Nay saith the Bishop of CanterburyB
The candles do but burnJ
-
I see a cloth of red samiteW
O'er the holy vessels spreadW
Nay saith the Bishop of CanterburyB
The great dawn groweth redW
-
I see all the torches of the worldW
Shine in the room so clearB
Nay saith the Bishop of CanterburyB
The white dawn draweth nearB
-
Sweet lady I behold the faceO
Of thy dear son our LordW
Nay saith the Bishop of CanterburyB
The sun shines on your swordW
-
Sir Galahad outstretcheth handsH2
And taketh me ere I failY
Sir Launcelot's body lay in deathP
As his soul found the Holy GrailY
-
They laid his body in the quireB
Upon a purple pallY
He was the meekest gentlest knightW
That ever ate in hallY
-
He was the kingliest goodliest knightW
That ever England rovedW
The truest lover of sinful manJ
That ever woman lovedW
-
I pray you all fair gentlemenJ
Pray for his soul and mineJ
He lived to lose the heart he lovedW
And drink but bitter wineJ
-
He wrought a woe he knew not ofI2
He failed his fondest questW
Now sing a psalter read a prayerB
May all souls find their restW
AmenJ
