My heart is an altar whereonA
Many sacrificial fires have been kindledB
In praise of spring and AphroditeC
-
My heart is an altar of chalcedonyC
Crowned with a tablet of bronzeD
Blacked with smoke scarred with fireE
And scented with the aromatic bitternessF
Of dead incenseG
-
Albeit let us murmur a little Doric prayerH
Over the ashes which lie scattered around the altarE
For the April rain has wept over themI
And from them the crocus smelts its Roman goldJ
-
What though there are remnants hereK
Of faded coronalsG
And bits of silver stringL
Torn from forgotten harpsG
Perfect amid the ashes sleeps a cup of amethystM
Let us take it and pour the sea from itN
And while the savor of dead lips is washed awayO
Let us lift our hands to this sky of hyacinthP
Let us light the altar newly for lo it is springL
-
Bring from the re kindled woodlandQ
Flames of columbine jewel weed and trumpet creeperK
There where the woodman burns the fallen treeK
And scented smoke arisesG
On azure wings between the branchesG
Budding with adolescent lifeR
With these let us light the altarK
That a scarlet flame may leanA
Against the silver seaK
-
For thou art fire alsoG
And air and water and the resurgent earthS
For thou art woman thou art loveT
Thou art April of the Arcadian moonA
Thou art the swift sun racing through snowy cloudsG
Thou art the creative silence of flowering valleysG
Thy face is the apple tree in bloomU
Thine eyes the glimpses of green waterK
When the tree's blossoms shakeV
As soft winds fan themI
Thy hair is flame blown against the sea's mistM
Thou art springL
-
The fire on the altar burns brightlyK
And the sea sparkles in the sunA
Let us murmur a Doric prayerK
For the gift of loveT
For the gift of lifeR
Oh Life Oh Love We lift our hands to theeK
