For He knoweth our frame He remembereth that we are dust PSALM CIIIA
-
-
Oh Lord when all our bones are thrustB
Beyond the gaze of all but ThineC
And these blaspheming tongues are dustB
Which babbled of Thy name divineC
How helpless then to carp or railD
Against the canons of Thy wordE
Wilt Thou when thus our spirits failD
Have mercy LordF
-
Here from this ebon speck that floatsA
As but a mote within Thine eyeG
Vain sneers and curses from our throatsA
Rise to the vault of Thy fair skyG
Yet when this world of ours is stillH
Of this all wondering tortured hordeF
And none is left for Thee to killH
Have mercy LordF
-
Thou knowest that our flesh is grassA
Ah let our withered souls remainI
Like stricken reeds of some morassA
Bleached in Thy will by ceaseless rainI
Have we not had enough of fireJ
Enough of torment and the swordF
If these accrue from Thy desireJ
Have mercy LordF
-
Dost Thou not see about our feetK
The tangles of our erring thoughtL
Thou knowest that we run to greetK
High hopes that vanish into naughtL
We bleed we fall we rise againM
How can we be of Thee abhorredF
We are Thy breed we little menM
Have mercy LordF
-
Wilt Thou then slay for that we slayN
Wilt Thou deny when we denyG
A thousand years are but a dayN
A little day within Thine eyeG
We thirst for love we yearn for lifeO
We lust wilt Thou the lust recordF
We beaten fall upon the knifeO
Have mercy LordF
-
Thou givest us youth that turns to ageP
And strength that leaves us while we seekQ
Thou pourest the fire of sacred rageP
In costly vessels all too weakQ
Great works we planned in hopes that ThouR
Fit wisdom therefor wouldst accordF
Thou wrotest failure on our browR
Have mercy LordF
-
Could we but know as Thou dost knowS
Hold the whole scheme at once in mindT
Yet dost Thou watch our anxious woeS
Who piece with palsied hands and blindT
The fragments of our little planU
To thrive and earn Thy blest rewardF
And make and keep the world of manU
Have mercy LordF
-
Thou settest the sun within his placeA
To light the world the world is ThineC
Put in our hands and through Thy graceA
To be subdued and made divineC
Whether we serve Thee ill or wellV
Thou knowest our frame nor canst affordF
To leave Thy own for long in hellV
Have mercy LordF
