I have known the silence of the stars and of the seaA
And the silence of the city when it pausesB
And the silence of a man and a maidC
And the silence of the sickD
When their eyes roam about the roomE
And I ask For the depthsF
Of what use is languageG
A beast of the field moans a few timesH
When death takes its youngI
And we are voiceless in the presence of realitiesJ
We cannot speakK
-
A curious boy asks an old soldierL
Sitting in front of the grocery storeM
How did you lose your legN
And the old soldier is struck with silenceO
Or his mind flies awayP
Because he cannot concentrate it on GettysburgQ
It comes back jocoselyR
And he says A bear bit it offS
And the boy wonders while the old soldierL
Dumbly feebly lives overL
The flashes of guns the thunder of cannonT
The shrieks of the slainU
And himself lying on the groundV
And the hospital surgeons the knivesW
And the long days in bedX
But if he could describe it allR
He would be an artistY
But if he were an artist there would be deeper woundsZ
Which he could not describeA2

There is the silence of a great hatredB2
And the silence of a great loveC2
And the silence of an embittered friendshipD2
There is the silence of a spiritual crisisE2
Through which your soul exquisitely torturedF2
Comes with visions not to be utteredF2
Into a realm of higher lifeG2
There is the silence of defeatH2
There is the silence of those unjustly punishedI2
And the silence of the dying whose handJ2
Suddenly grips yoursK2
There is the silence between father and sonT
When the father cannot explain his lifeG2
Even though he be misunderstood for itL2
-
There is the silence that comes between husband and wifeG2
There is the silence of those who have failedM2
And the vast silence that coversN2
Broken nations and vanquished leadersN2
There is the silence of LincolnT
Thinking of the poverty of his youthO2
And the silence of NapoleonT
After WaterlooR
And the silence of Jeanne d'ArcP2
Saying amid the flames Blessed JesusE2
Revealing in two words all sorrows all hopeQ2
And there is the silence of ageR2
Too full of wisdom for the tongue to utter itL2
In words intelligible to those who have not livedS2
The great range of lifeG2
-
And there is the silence of the deadX
If we who are in life cannot speakK
Of profound experiencesT2
Why do you marvel that the deadX
Do not tell you of deathU2
Their silence shall be interpretedB2
As we approach themV2
