Silas Dement Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJJEKLLMNNOP QRSTN| It was moon light and the earth sparkled | A |
| With new fallen frost | B |
| It was midnight and not a soul was abroad | C |
| Out of the chimney of the court house | D |
| A grey hound of smoke leapt and chased | E |
| The northwest wind | F |
| I carried a ladder to the landing of the stairs | G |
| And leaned it against the frame of the trap door | H |
| In the ceiling of the portico | I |
| And I crawled under the roof and amid the rafters | J |
| And flung among the seasoned timbers | J |
| A lighted handful of oil soaked waste | E |
| Then I came down and slunk away | K |
| In a little while the fire bell rang | L |
| Clang Clang Clang | L |
| And the Spoon River ladder company | M |
| Came with a dozen buckets and began to pour water | N |
| On the glorious bon fire growing hotter | N |
| Higher and brighter till the walls fell in | O |
| And the limestone columns where Lincoln stood | P |
| Crashed like trees when the woodman fells them | Q |
| When I came back from Joliet | R |
| There was a new court house with a dome | S |
| For I was punished like all who destroy | T |
| The past for the sake of the future | N |
