Silas Dement Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJJEKLLMNNOP QRSTN

It was moon light and the earth sparkledA
With new fallen frostB
It was midnight and not a soul was abroadC
Out of the chimney of the court houseD
A grey hound of smoke leapt and chasedE
The northwest windF
I carried a ladder to the landing of the stairsG
And leaned it against the frame of the trap doorH
In the ceiling of the porticoI
And I crawled under the roof and amid the raftersJ
And flung among the seasoned timbersJ
A lighted handful of oil soaked wasteE
Then I came down and slunk awayK
In a little while the fire bell rangL
Clang Clang ClangL
And the Spoon River ladder companyM
Came with a dozen buckets and began to pour waterN
On the glorious bon fire growing hotterN
Higher and brighter till the walls fell inO
And the limestone columns where Lincoln stoodP
Crashed like trees when the woodman fells themQ
When I came back from JolietR
There was a new court house with a domeS
For I was punished like all who destroyT
The past for the sake of the futureN
