Samuel Gardner Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFBGHIJKLMENOOLP Q

I who kept the greenhouseA
Lover of trees and flowersB
Oft in life saw this umbrageous elmC
Measuring its generous branches with my eyeD
And listened to its rejoicing leavesE
Lovingly patting each otherF
With sweet olian whispersB
And well they mightG
For the roots had grown so wide and deepH
That the soil of the hill could not withholdI
Aught of its virtue enriched by rainJ
And warmed by the sunK
But yielded it all to the thrifty rootsL
Through which it was drawn and whirled to the trunkM
And thence to the branches and into the leavesE
Wherefrom the breeze took life and sangN
Now I an under tenant of the earth can seeO
That the branches of a treeO
Spread no wider than its rootsL
And how shall the soul of a manP
Be larger than the life he has livedQ
