Rutherford Mcdowell Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFAGAAHIJKALMMAN OOOOAM| They brought me ambrotypes | A |
| Of the old pioneers to enlarge | B |
| And sometimes one sat for me | C |
| Some one who was in being | D |
| When giant hands from the womb of the world | E |
| Tore the republic | F |
| What was it in their eyes | A |
| For I could never fathom | G |
| That mystical pathos of drooped eyelids | A |
| And the serene sorrow of their eyes | A |
| It was like a pool of water | H |
| Amid oak trees at the edge of a forest | I |
| Where the leaves fall | J |
| As you hear the crow of a cock | K |
| From a far off farm house seen near the hills | A |
| Where the third generation lives and the strong men | L |
| And the strong women are gone and forgotten | M |
| And these grand children and great grand children | M |
| Of the pioneers | A |
| Truly did my camera record their faces too | N |
| With so much of the old strength gone | O |
| And the old faith gone | O |
| And the old mastery of life gone | O |
| And the old courage gone | O |
| Which labors and loves and suffers and sings | A |
| Under the sun | M |
