Richard Bone Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLFMNOIP| When I first came to Spoon River | A |
| I did not know whether what they told me | B |
| Was true or false | C |
| They would bring me the epitaph | D |
| And stand around the shop while I worked | E |
| And say He was so kind He was wonderful | F |
| She was the sweetest woman He was a consistent Christian | G |
| And I chiseled for them whatever they wished | H |
| All in ignorance of its truth | I |
| But later as I lived among the people here | J |
| I knew how near to the life | K |
| Were the epitaphs that were ordered for them as they died | L |
| But still I chiseled whatever they paid me to chisel | F |
| And made myself party to the false chronicles | M |
| Of the stones | N |
| Even as the historian does who writes | O |
| Without knowing the truth | I |
| Or because he is influenced to hide it | P |
