Percival Sharp Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDAEAFGHIAAJAAAKLM INOPQLRObserve the clasped hands | A |
Are they hands of farewell or greeting | B |
Hands that I helped or hands that helped me | C |
Would it not be well to carve a hand | D |
With an inverted thumb like Elagabalus | A |
And yonder is a broken chain | E |
The weakest link idea perhaps | A |
But what was it | F |
And lambs some lying down | G |
Others standing as if listening to the shepherd | H |
Others bearing a cross one foot lifted up | I |
Why not chisel a few shambles | A |
And fallen columns Carve the pedestal please | A |
Or the foundations let us see the cause of the fall | J |
And compasses and mathematical instruments | A |
In irony of the under tenants' ignorance | A |
Of determinants and the calculus of variations | A |
And anchors for those who never sailed | K |
And gates ajar yes so they were | L |
You left them open and stray goats entered your garden | M |
And an eye watching like one of the Arimaspi | I |
So did you with one eye | N |
And angels blowing trumpets you are heralded | O |
It is your horn and your angel and your family's estimate | P |
It is all very well but for myself I know | Q |
I stirred certain vibrations in Spoon River | L |
Which are my true epitaph more lasting than stone | R |
