Peleg Poague Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHFIJKLMNOB| Horses and men are just alike | A |
| There was my stallion Billy Lee | B |
| Black as a cat and trim as a deer | C |
| With an eye of fire keen to start | D |
| And he could hit the fastest speed | E |
| Of any racer around Spoon River | F |
| But just as you'd think he couldn't lose | G |
| With his lead of fifty yards or more | H |
| He'd rear himself and throw the rider | F |
| And fall back over tangled up | I |
| Completely gone to pieces | J |
| You see he was a perfect fraud | K |
| He couldn't win he couldn't work | L |
| He was too light to haul or plow with | M |
| And no one wanted colts from him | N |
| And when I tried to drive him well | O |
| He ran away and killed me | B |
