Pauline Barrett Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGGHIEJKELEMNOP PQER

Almost the shell of a woman after the surgeon's knifeA
And almost a year to creep back into strengthB
Till the dawn of our wedding decennialC
Found me my seeming self againD
We walked the forest togetherE
By a path of soundless moss and turfF
But I could not look in your eyesG
And you could not look in my eyesG
For such sorrow was ours the beginning of gray in your hairH
And I but a shell of myselfI
And what did we talk of sky and waterE
Anything 'most to hide our thoughtsJ
And then your gift of wild rosesK
Set on the table to grace our dinnerE
Poor heart how bravely you struggledL
To imagine and live a remembered raptureE
Then my spirit drooped as the night came onM
And you left me alone in my room for a whileN
As you did when I was a bride poor heartO
And I looked in the mirror and something saidP
One should be all dead when one is half deadP
Nor ever mock life nor ever cheat loveQ
And I did it looking there in the mirrorE
Dear have you ever understoodR
