Many Soldiers Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGGHIJKLMNOPQKR HST

The idea danced before us as a flagA
The sound of martial musicB
The thrill of carrying a gunC
Advancement in the world on coming homeD
A glint of glory wrath for foesE
A dream of duty to country or to GodF
But these were things in ourselves shining before usG
They were not the power behind usG
Which was the Almighty hand of LifeH
Like fire at earth's centre making mountainsI
Or pent up waters that cut them throughJ
Do you remember the iron bandK
The blacksmith Shack Dye weldedL
Around the oak on Bennet's lawnM
From which to swing a hammockN
That daughter Janet might repose in readingO
On summer afternoonsP
And that the growing tree at lastQ
Sundered the iron bandK
But not a cell in all the treeR
Knew aught save that it thrilled with lifeH
Nor cared because the hammock fellS
In the dust with Milton's PoemsT
