Magrady Graham Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJAKLMNOLPQ

Tell me was Altgeld elected GovernorA
For when the returns began to come inB
And Cleveland was sweeping the EastC
It was too much for you poor old heartD
Who had striven for democracyE
In the long long years of defeatF
And like a watch that is wornG
I felt you growing slower until you stoppedH
Tell me was Altgeld electedI
And what did he doJ
Did they bring his head on a platter to a dancerA
Or did he triumph for the peopleK
For when I saw himL
And took his handM
The child like blueness of his eyesN
Moved me to tearsO
And there was an air of eternity about himL
Like the cold clear light that rests at dawnP
On the hillsQ
