Louise Smith Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLMN

Herbert broke our engagement of eight yearsA
When Annabelle returned to the village From theB
Seminary ah meC
If I had let my love for him aloneD
It might have grown into a beautiful sorrowE
Who knows filling my life with healing fragranceF
But I tortured it I poisoned itG
I blinded its eyes and it became hatredH
Deadly ivy instead of clematisI
And my soul fell from its supportJ
Its tendrils tangled in decayK
Do not let the will play gardener to your soulL
Unless you are sureM
It is wiser than your soul's natureN
