Rhyme Scheme: ABCADEFDGHIJKLMANOPQ RSGTUVI have two monuments besides this granite obelisk | A |
One the house I built on the hill | B |
With its spires bay windows and roof of slate | C |
The other the lake front in Chicago | A |
Where the railroad keeps a switching yard | D |
With whistling engines and crunching wheels | E |
And smoke and soot thrown over the city | F |
And the crash of cars along the boulevard | D |
A blot like a hog pen on the harbor | G |
Of a great metropolis foul as a sty | H |
I helped to give this heritage | I |
To generations yet unborn with my vote | J |
In the House of Representatives | K |
And the lure of the thing was to be at rest | L |
From the never ending fright of need | M |
And to give my daughters gentle breeding | A |
And a sense of security in life | N |
But you see though I had the mansion house | O |
And traveling passes and local distinction | P |
I could hear the whispers whispers whispers | Q |
Wherever I went and my daughters grew up | R |
With a look as if someone were about to strike them | S |
And they married madly helter skelter | G |
Just to get out and have a change | T |
And what was the whole of the business worth | U |
Why it wasn't worth a damn | V |
