Justice Arnett Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJCJKLMNCOOP BOQIt is true fellow citizens | A |
That my old docket lying there for years | B |
On a shelf above my head and over | C |
The seat of justice I say it is true | D |
That docket had an iron rim | E |
Which gashed my baldness when it fell | F |
Somehow I think it was shaken loose | G |
By the heave of the air all over town | H |
When the gasoline tank at the canning works | I |
Blew up and burned Butch Weldy | J |
But let us argue points in order | C |
And reason the whole case carefully | J |
First I concede my head was cut | K |
But second the frightful thing was this | L |
The leaves of the docket shot and showered | M |
Around me like a deck of cards | N |
In the hands of a sleight of hand performer | C |
And up to the end I saw those leaves | O |
Till I said at last Those are not leaves | O |
Why can't you see they are days and days | P |
And the days and days of seventy years | B |
And why do you torture me with leaves | O |
And the little entries on them | Q |
