| That my old docket lying there for years | B |
| On a shelf above my head and over | C |
| The seat of justice I say it is true | D |
| That docket had an iron rim | E |
| Which gashed my baldness when it fell | F |
| Somehow I think it was shaken loose | G |
| By the heave of the air all over town | H |
| When the gasoline tank at the canning works | I |
| Blew up and burned Butch Weldy | J |
| But let us argue points in order | C |
| And reason the whole case carefully | J |
| First I concede my head was cut | K |
| But second the frightful thing was this | L |
| The leaves of the docket shot and showered | M |
| Around me like a deck of cards | N |
| In the hands of a sleight of hand performer | C |
| And up to the end I saw those leaves | O |
| Till I said at last Those are not leaves | O |
| Why can't you see they are days and days | P |
| And the days and days of seventy years | B |
| And why do you torture me with leaves | O |
