Josiah Tompkins Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIIJKLLDMKK| I was well known and much beloved | A |
| And rich as fortunes are reckoned | B |
| In Spoon River where I had lived and worked | C |
| That was the home for me | D |
| Though all my children had flown afar | E |
| Which is the way of Nature all but one | F |
| The boy who was the baby stayed at home | G |
| To be my help in my failing years | H |
| And the solace of his mother | I |
| But I grew weaker as he grew stronger | I |
| And he quarreled with me about the business | J |
| And his wife said I was a hindrance to it | K |
| And he won his mother to see as he did | L |
| Till they tore me up to be transplanted | L |
| With them to her girlhood home in Missouri | D |
| And so much of my fortune was gone at last | M |
| Though I made the will just as he drew it | K |
| He profited little by it | K |
