John Cabanis Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCDEFGAAHIJKLMNAL

Neither spite fellow citizensA
Nor forgetfulness of the shiftlessnessA
And the lawlessness and wasteB
Under democracy's rule in Spoon RiverC
Made me desert the party of law and orderC
And lead the liberal partyD
Fellow citizens I saw as one with second sightE
That every man of the millions of menF
Who give themselves to FreedomG
And fail while Freedom failsA
Enduring waste and lawlessnessA
And the rule of the weak and the blindH
Dies in the hope of building earthI
Like the coral insect for the templeJ
To stand on at the lastK
And I swear that Freedom will wage to the endL
The war for making every soulM
Wise and strong and as fit to ruleN
As Plato's lofty guardiansA
In a world republic girdledL
