Nothing in life is alien to youA
I was a penniless girl from SummumB
Who stepped from the morning train in Spoon RiverC
All the houses stood before me with closed doorsD
And drawn shades I was barred outE
I had no place or part in any of themF
And I walked past the old McNeely mansionG
A castle of stone 'mid walks and gardensH
With workmen about the place on guardI
And the County and State upholding itJ
For its lordly owner full of prideK
I was so hungry I had a visionG
I saw a giant pair of scissorsL
Dip from the sky like the beam of a dredgeM
And cut the house in two like a curtainG
But at the Commercial I saw a manN
Who winked at me as I asked for workO
It was Wash McNeely's sonG
He proved the link in the chain of titleP
To half my ownership of the mansionG
Through a breach of promise suit the scissorsL
So you see the house from the day I was bornQ
Was only waiting for meR
