Rhyme Scheme: ABCDECAFGFHIFEFJGEK| I made two fights for the people | A |
| First I left my party bearing the gonfalon | B |
| Of independence for reform and was defeated | C |
| Next I used my rebel strength | D |
| To capture the standard of my old party | E |
| And I captured it but I was defeated | C |
| Discredited and discarded misanthropical | A |
| I turned to the solace of gold | F |
| And I used my remnant of power | G |
| To fasten myself like a saprophyte | F |
| Upon the putrescent carcass | H |
| Of Thomas Rhodes' bankrupt bank | I |
| As assignee of the fund | F |
| Everyone now turned from me | E |
| My hair grew white | F |
| My purple lusts grew gray | J |
| Tobacco and whisky lost their savor | G |
| And for years Death ignored me | E |
| As he does a hog | K |
