Herman Altman Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGGHIJGJKLMNOGP Q

Did I follow Truth wherever she ledA
And stand against the whole world for a causeB
And uphold the weak against the strongC
If I did I would be remembered among menD
As I was known in life among the peopleE
And as I was hated and loved on earthF
Therefore build no monument to meG
And carve no bust for meG
Lest though I become not a demi godH
The reality of my soul be lostI
So that thieves and liarsJ
Who were my enemies and destroyed meG
And the children of thieves and liarsJ
May claim me and affirm before my bustK
That they stood with me in the days of my defeatL
Build me no monumentM
Lest my memory be perverted to the usesN
Of lying and oppressionO
My lovers and their children must not be dispossessed of meG
I would be the untarnished possession foreverP
Of those for whom I livedQ
