On an ancient vase representing in bas relief the flight of HelenA
-
-
This is the vase of LoveB
Whose feet would ever roveC
O'er land and seaD
Whose hopes forever seekE
Bright eyes the vermeiled cheekE
And ways made freeD
-
Do we not understandF
Why thou didst leave thy landF
Thy spouse thy hearthG
Helen of Troy Greek artH
Hath made our heart thy heartH
Thy mirth our mirthI
-
For Paris did appearJ
Curled hair and rosy earK
And tapering handsL
He spoke the blood ran fastM
He touched and killed the pastM
And clove its bandsL
-
And this I deem is whyN
The restless ages sighN
Helen for theeD
Whate'er we do or dreamO
Whate'er we say or seemO
We would be freeD
-
We would forsake old loveB
And all the pain thereofB
And all the careP
We would find out new seasQ
And lands more strange than theseQ
And flowers more fairP
-
We would behold fresh skiesR
Where summer never diesR
And amaranths springS
Lands where the halcyon hoursT
Nest over scented bowersT
On folded wingS
-
We would be crowned with baysU
And spend the long bright daysU
On sea or shoreV
Or sit by haunted woodsW
And watch the deep sea's moodsX
And hear its roarV
-
Beneath that ancient skyN
Who is not fain to flyN
As men have fledY
Ah we would know reliefZ
From marts of wine and beefZ
And oil and breadY
-
Helen of Troy Greek artH
Hath made our heart thy heartH
Thy love our loveB
For poesy like theeD
Must fly and wander freeD
As the wild doveB
