Harold Arnett Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHGIJKLMNOH

I leaned against the mantel sick sickA
Thinking of my failure looking into the abysmB
Weak from the noon day heatC
A church bell sounded mournfully far awayD
I heard the cry of a babyE
And the coughing of John YarnellF
Bed ridden feverish feverish dyingG
Then the violent voice of my wifeH
Watch out the potatoes are burningG
I smelled them then there was irresistible disgustI
I pulled the trigger blackness lightJ
Unspeakable regret fumbling for the world againK
Too late Thus I came hereL
With lungs for breathing one cannot breathe here with lungsM
Though one must breatheN
Of what use is it To rid one's self of the worldO
When no soul may ever escape the eternal destiny of lifeH
