I wrote him a letter asking him for old times' sakeA
To discharge my sick boy from the armyB
But maybe he couldn't read itC
Then I went to town and had James GarberD
Who wrote beautifully write him a letterD
But maybe that was lost in the mailsE
So I traveled all the way to WashingtonF
I was more than an hour finding the White HouseG
And when I found it they turned me awayH
Hiding their smiles Then I thoughtI
Oh well he ain't the same as when I boarded himJ
And he and my husband worked togetherD
And all of us called him Abe there in MenardK
As a last attempt I turned to a guard and saidL
Please say it's old Aunt Hannah ArmstrongM
From Illinois come to see him about her sick boyN
In the armyB
Well just in a moment they let me inO
And when he saw me he broke in a laughP
And dropped his business as presidentQ
And wrote in his own hand Doug's dischargeR
Talking the while of the early daysS
And telling storiesT
