With our hearts like drifting suns had we but walkedA
As often before the April fields till star lightB
Silkened over with viewless gauze the darknessC
Under the cliff our trysting place in the woodD
Where the brook turns Had we but passed from wooingE
Like notes of music that run together into winningE
In the inspired improvisation of loveF
But to put back of us as a canticle endedG
The rapt enchantment of the fleshH
In which our souls swooned down downI
Where time was not nor space nor ourselvesJ
Annihilated in loveF
To leave these behind for a room with lampsK
And to stand with our Secret mocking itselfL
And hiding itself amid flowers and mandolinsK
Stared at by all between salad and coffeeM
And to see him tremble and feel myselfL
Prescient as one who signs a bondN
Not flaming with gifts and pledges heapedO
With rosy hands over his browP
And then O night deliberate unlovelyQ
With all of our wooing blotted out by the winningE
In a chosen room in an hour that was known to allQ
Next day he sat so listless almost coldR
So strangely changed wondering why I weptS
Till a kind of sick despair and voluptuous madnessK
Seized us to make the pact of deathT
-
A stalk of the earth sphereU
Frail as star lightB
Waiting to be drawn once againV
Into creation's streamW
But next time to be given birthX
Gazed at by Raphael and St FrancisK
Sometimes as they passK
For I am their little brotherY
To be known clearly face to faceK
Through a cycle of birth hereafter runZ
You may know the seed and the soilQ
You may feel the cold rain fallQ
But only the earth sphere only heavenZ
Knows the secret of the seedA2
In the nuptial chamber under the soilQ
Throw me into the stream againV
Give me another trialQ
Save me ShelleyQ
