I saw a beautiful woman with bandaged eyes | D |
Standing on the steps of a marble temple | E |
Great multitudes passed in front of her | F |
Lifting their faces to her imploringly | E |
In her left hand she held a sword | G |
She was brandishing the sword | G |
Sometimes striking a child again a laborer | F |
Again a slinking woman again a lunatic | H |
In her right hand she held a scale | E |
Into the scale pieces of gold were tossed | I |
By those who dodged the strokes of the sword | G |
A man in a black gown read from a manuscript | J |
'She is no respecter of persons ' | K |
Then a youth wearing a red cap | L |
Leaped to her side and snatched away the bandage | M |
And lo the lashes had been eaten away | N |
From the oozy eye lids | O |
The eye balls were seared with a milky mucus | P |
The madness of a dying soul | E |
Was written on her face | Q |
But the multitude saw why she wore the bandage | M |
