Bert Kessler Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLKMNOPQIG

I winged my birdA
Though he flew toward the setting sunB
But just as the shot rang out he soaredC
Up and up through the splinters of golden lightD
Till he turned right over feathers ruffledE
With some of the down of him floating nearF
And fell like a plummet into the grassG
I tramped about parting the tanglesH
Till I saw a splash of blood on a stumpI
And the quail lying close to the rotten rootsJ
I reached my hand but saw no brierK
But something pricked and stung and numbed itL
And then in a second I spied the rattlerK
The shutters wide in his yellow eyesM
The head of him arched sunk back in the rings of himN
A circle of filth the color of ashesO
Or oak leaves bleached under layers of leavesP
I stood like a stone as he shrank and uncoiledQ
And started to crawl beneath the stumpI
When I fell limp in the grassG
