Benjamin Fraser Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDBEFGHIJKBLMKNOPQ RAS

Their spirits beat upon mineA
Like the wings of a thousand butterfliesB
I closed my eyes and felt their spirits vibratingC
I closed my eyes yet I knew when their lashesD
Fringed their cheeks from downcast eyesB
And when they turned their headsE
And when their garments clung to themF
Or fell from them in exquisite draperiesG
Their spirits watched my ecstasyH
With wide looks of starry unconcernI
Their spirits looked upon my tortureJ
They drank it as it were the water of lifeK
With reddened cheeks brightened eyesB
The rising flame of my soul made their spirits giltL
Like the wings of a butterfly drifting suddenly into sunlightM
And they cried to me for life life lifeK
But in taking life for myselfN
In seizing and crushing their soulsO
As a child crushes grapes and drinksP
From its palms the purple juiceQ
I came to this wingless voidR
Where neither red nor gold nor wineA
Nor the rhythm of life are knownS
